The Problem of Kidney Disease
More than 20 million Americans suffer from diseases of the
kidney and urinary tract. More than 50,000 die each year from these diseases.
About 260,000 Americans suffer from chronic kidney failure
and need an artificial kidney machine to stay alive.
Adult-onset diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of
chronic kidney failure, accounting for 35 percent of new cases each year and 25 percent of
all cases in the U.S.
High blood pressure is the second leading cause of chronic
kidney failure in the U.S.; it accounts for about 30 percent of all cases.
